Abstract
<PICT:0953344/C3/1> <PICT:0953344/C3/2> <PICT:0953344/C3/3> <PICT:0953344/C3/4> Decorative or ornamental aluminium metal or alloy articles, such as sheets, strips, bars, rods or tubes, are produced by adjusting the metal grains to coarse sizes so that a surface of each article has crystal faces of macroscopic sizes, e.g. 0.01-3 cm. or more, etching the surface in a solution of, for example, hydrochloric, nitric (e.g. each 20-40% by volume) and optionally hydrofluoric (e.g. 1-3%) acids for 1-10 minutes to produce a mild etch, Fig. 1, or up to one hour or more to produce a severe etch, Fig. 2, thus exposing the crystal faces and their boundaries, anodically forming a transparent oxide film of aluminium on the crystal faces with an electrolytic anodizing bath of preferably 15% sulphuric acid at 70 DEG F. using D.C. of 12 amps./sq. ft. of the surface, preferably dyeing at least an area of the film with any colour, e.g. ferric ammonium oxalate for gold colour, thus creating shades and hues differing from crystal face to crystal face, and sealing the film, eg. in boiling water or steam to render it non-porous. The crystal grains are adjusted to the required sizes by deforming the article, such as by directional cold rolling to produce final result as in Fig. 4, or bending, pressing, drawing or stretching, to a reduction of 1-15% in thickness, and annealing, e.g. in a furnace at 600-1150 DEG F. for 10 minutes to 3 hours. An example of a ribbed article with the ribs receiving 8% reduction is shown in Fig. 6. The article may be solution heat-treated or work-hardened after annealing and before anodizing to impart strength. Specified alloys include the following:-(a) 0.2-0.4% Mn, 0.9-1.2% Mg, max. 0.05% Cu, max. 0.15% Fe, max. 0.1% Si, remainder Al; (b) 0.35-0.55% Si, max. 0.32% Fe, max. 0.1% Mn, 0.55-0.75% Mg, 0.01% Cr, remainder Al; (c) 0.3% Mn, 1.0% Mg, max. 0.1% Si, max. 0.15% Fe, max. 0.05% Cu, remainder Al; (d) max. 0.06% Si, max. 0.06% Fe, max. 0.005% Ti, at least 99.87% Al.
