Abstract

An anodizable metal e.g. Mg, Al, Be, Ti or their alloys, is anodized and the porous oxide layer is coated to fill the pores, with solid particles e.g. carbon or colloidal Al2O3, by electrophoretic deposition; after which the coatings are heat sealed e.g. at 350 DEG C. The porous oxide layer may be formed by anodizing e.g. in dilute H2SO4, or by spraying molten Al2O3 as droplets through a flame gun which may be applied to a steel sheet. An apparatus is illustrated provided with a switch reversing the current, so that anodizing and electrophoretic coating of a suspension of fine carbon particles may be effected in the same bath container. Anodizing electrolytes specified are H2SO4 and oxalic acid. The coating medium consists of colloidal graphite or alumina suspended in isopropyl alcohol.
