Abstract

1,181,996. Electro-phoretic deposition of metal. GENERAL ELECTRIC CO. May 9, 1967 [Aug.l, 1966], No.21508/67. Heading C7B [Also in Division C1] A metallic article is provided with a corrosionresistant coating by (a) cleaning to eliminate dirt, organic materials and surface oxides, (b) electrophoretically depositing a porous metallic coating in the form of a matrix from a bath containing suspended coating metal and an inorganic electrolyte, and (c) after removal from the bath and drying, dispersing about the matrix a liquid non-metallic binder in the form of finely divided droplets in a solvent while maintaining the solvent/binder ratio in the divided state the same as in bulk form, so as to impregnate the matrix with the binder, and (d) removing the article with its impregnated matrix coating, drying the binder in the matrix and curing the binder to bind the matrix to the surface of the article. Typically stainless steel panels are degreased, grit blasted with alumina or glass beads, and aluminium is electro-phoretically deposited on it from a bath comprising aluminium dispersed in an ethane solution of AlCl 3 which is externally circulated through a water-jacketed heat exchanger to maintain the bath at 28 to 35‹C., and the coated panel after drying is impregnated by immersion in a fog of a liquid binder based on a phosphate glass and including chromic and phosphoric acids, such the aqueous composition of Specification 1,113, 553 which also includes magnesium, acid magnesium phosphate and sodium silicate, followed by curing at 600‹F.
