Abstract

1,255,485. Joint-making packing. ENGINEERING COMPONENTS Ltd., and D. P. LYNCH. 5 Dec., 1969 [18 Dec., 1968], No. 60079/68. Heading F2B. An eyelet 14 secured to an aperture 11 in a cylinder head gasket is formed from a metal base to which is bonded a layer 17 of fluent material (i.e. a thermoplastics material such as PVC). Fig. 2 is a detail of Fig. 1 showing the layer 17. The base metal may be steel, electrotinned steel, aluminium clad steel or copper. The material for the eyelets may be produced by first cleaning and drying a metal base or strip and then coating the surface with a primer (e.g. polyvinyl butyral solution); after the primer has been dried in an oven, the surface is coated with particles of PVC dispersed in plasticizer with solvent and treated in the oven to form the PVC coating. The gasket may be formed of a central metal layer 10 covered on each side by a layer 10A, 10B of asbestos or other heatresistant composition, the eyelet 14 surrounding the cylinder bore 11 being arranged to extend to the aperture 12 for the cooling liquid.
