Abstract

1,252,830. Joint-making packing. CHAMPION SPARK PLUG CO. 2 Dec., 1969 [2 Dec., 1968], No. 58732/69. Heading F2B. A sparking plug gasket comprises an annular body which is of sinusoidal cross-section to provide facing surfaces 18, 18 and 19, 19 and is axially compressible to exert a constant force between the sparking plug and its seat, the facing surfaces being coated with a material 24 which is thermoplastic or thermally decomposable at a temperature not higher than about 200‹ F., and the thickness of the coating being such that the torque required to remove the plug after operation and after the coating has been modified by the heat of operation is not greater than the installation torque. The coating 24 may be a thermoplastic such as an acrylic lacquer (e.g. methylmethacrylate polymer) the thickness of the coating being between 0À00003 and 0À0005 inch and applied by immersion. Other materials suitable for the coating include household glues, paper or regenerated cellulose.
