Abstract

The oxide-coated metal surfaces formed by electrolytic anodization are improved by impregnating the coated surface immediately after anodizing with an aliphatic compound having a terminal polar group e.g. aliphatic acids of 3 to 22C atoms, alcohols of 8-18C atoms, or amines. In examples higher fatty acids including caproic, stearic, and sebacic acids; octyl, and dodecyl alcohol; dodecylamine, and hexandiamine may be used, and are applied in liquid state at temperatures up to 350 DEG F. for 10-80 mins. Any anodizing method may be used but preferred is 15% H2SO4 at 15 A.S.F. for 40 mins. at 74 DEG F. It is stated that the anodic layer comprises a hard barrier oxide layer on the metal with an over-coat of porous oxide, and the treatment forms a chemisorbed impregnated coating which may be a soap or an alcoholate bonded to the metal Metals treated include aluminium and its alloys, magnesium, and titanium. The treated metals are resistant to fatigue and a table of flexure tests is given.
