Abstract

1383241 Electrolytically colouring anodized aluminium O C GEDDE 3 Jan 1972 [2 Jan 1971] 194/72 Heading C7B An Al or Al alloy article, having an aluminium oxide layer formed thereon by previous anodizing (e.g. in H 2 SO 4 ), is electrolytically coloured by applying an alternating voltage or a pulsating voltage derived from an alternating voltage to the article and a counter-electrode in an acid aqueous solution of an ionizable compound of Mo or W to form a coloured Mo or W compound in the aluminium oxide layer. The counter electrode may be of Mo, W, Ti or stainless steel. The Mo or W compound may be silicomolybdic or silicotungstic acid or ammonium heptamolybdate. The solution may also comprise an ionizable compound of a metal other than Mo or W and capable of yielding a coloured compound. The frequency of the pulsating current may be at 1.5 pulses per second. The voltage may be 2 to 50V and the current density 0.2 to 1.0A/dm<SP>2</SP>. Between the initial anodizing and the subsequent electrolytic colouring there may be an additional electrolytic colouring step using an ionizable compound of a metal other than Mo or W. The final product may be sealed in boiling water.
