Abstract

1464857 Anodizing Al in chromic acid NATIONAL RESEARCH DEVELOPMENT CORP 8 May 1974 [8 Feb 1973 12 June 1973] 6234/73 and 27850/73 Heading C7B Al or Al alloy is anodized in chromic acid of 0À05-0À7M at 55 to 70‹C at a c.d. below 50 mA/cm<SP>2</SP> but, for at least the major portion of the process, above 6 mA/cm<SP>2</SP> to produce an anodic film of thickness at least 15Á. Conditions are e.g. 90-150V for up to 90 mins. D.C. with up to 10 per cent A.C. may be used. Air agitation at the electrodes is specified with a steel cathode, and cathode: anode area ratio from 10-30:1. Increased V at constant c.d. produces a film having pores whose size increases towards the Al surface. Operation at constant V is possible. The anodic film may be sealed in boiling water or steam or with a lacquer or resin. Pre-treatments include degreasing and etching in inhibited NaOH or electro-polishing in HClO 4 /ethanol.
