Abstract

1436437 Aluminium alloys; anodizing KAISER ALUMINUM & CHEMICAL CORP 5 Nov 1973 51310/73 Headings C7A and C7B Aluminium sheet material for colouring by an integral colour anodizing process has a composition in percent by weight Al the balance with not over .05 each and not over 15 in total of other elements. The alloy is homogenized at 1000-1125‹F for 4-24 hours, hot-rolled, e.g. at 750-850‹F and, if desired, cold-rolled below 250‹F. Colour anodizing may be effected in an aqueous electrolyte containing 65 g/l sulphosalicylic acid, 5.8 g/l sulphuric acid and 1.7 g/l dissolved Al, e.g. in two stages: first at constant CD of 30 A/ft<SP>2</SP> until peak voltage of 65 volts, then at constant voltage of 65 volts until total current of 10 A/ft<SP>2</SP> had passed. Prior to anodizing the hot-rolled alloy may be alkaline cleaned, deoxidized in 50% nitric acid, caustic etched and desmutted in 50% nitric acid.
