Abstract

1,191,435. Electro-deposition of ruthenium. ENGLEHARD INDUSTRIES Ltd. Jan. 7, 1969, No. 1051/69. Heading C7B. Ruthenium is electro-plated on to a metallic article from an aqueous solution having a pH in the range 1À2 to 3À0 and containing (a) Ru ions complexed by an organic acid, (b) sulphamate ions, and (c) ammonium ions. The solution can be prepared by heating an aqueous solution containing a Ru (III) compound and an organic acid, and adding sulphamic acid and an ammonium salt. The Ru III compound can be a halide (e. g. chloride), sulphate, nitrate, acetate or sulphamate or can be in the form of a HNO 3 solution of the oxide or hydroxide. The organic acid can be acetic, citric, oxalic, tartaric, heptonic, malic gluconic, lactic or glycollic acid. The ammonium salt may be ammonium sulphamate. For the electro-plating, a Pt or platinized Ti anode can be used, the electrolyte solution can be at 20 to 80‹ C. and the cathode current density can be 0À54 to 5À4 amps/ sq. dm. In the Examples, Ru is electro-deposited on to polished brass which has been plated with Au.
