Abstract

447,421. Electrolytic surface treatment of aluminium and its alloys. GOWER, C. H. R., and BOWEN, E. WINDSOR-, Thames Factory, Rainville Road, Hammersmith, London. Nov. 17, 1934, No. 33157. [Class 41] The metals are coated by anodic treatment in a bath containing sulphuric acid and relatively small proportions of gallic acid and boric acid. Suitable proportions are 7-8“ fluid ounces of sulphuric acid, 0À55 ounces of gallic acid and 0À55 ounce of boric acid to 1 gallon of water. A current density of 8-12 amps. per sq. ft. and temperature 78-96‹ F., preferably 80-90‹ F., are employed. The period of treatment may be 30-40 minutes ; this is extended when the coating is to be subsequently dyed a dark colour. The coating operation may be preceded by anodic treatment for cleaning and the formation of a thin film of oxide as described in Specification 447,420.
