359,495. Electrolytic treatment of aluminium. SHEPPARD, S. R., 61, London Road, Redhill, Surrey. July 23, 1930, No. 22188. Grant of Patent opposed. [Class 41.] Protective hydroxide coatings formed by anodic treatment on articles of aluminium or its alloys or on aluminium-coated articles are coloured bv electrolytic treatment in a bath containing an organic dyestuff. Dyestuffs such as those of the alizarine series may be added to the electrolyte, e.g. a bath of glycerine and water slightly acidified, used to produce the hydroxide coating. Basic dyes and vat dyes are incorporated by anodic treatment in an alkaline electrolyte containing these dyes after formation of the hydroxide coating. The current density for the dyeing operation may be 4 amps. per square foot at 3-6 volts and is less than that used for the coating operation. Specification 359,494 is referred to.
