Abstract

489,926. Electrolytic surface treatment of aluminium and its alloys; ornamenting. NAGATA, K. Oct. 31, 1936, No. 29660. [Class 41] [Also in Group XV] Aluminium or an aluminium alloy is treated anodically to form an oxidized film consisting in part of glutinous aluminium hydroxide and is then treated with an acidic or direct dyestuff, the glutinous aluminium hydroxide forming a mordant; the dyed article is then subjected to superheated steam at 40-70 lb. per sq. inch pressure for about half an hour. Acetic acid may be added to the dye-bath ; this increases the absorptive capacity of the coating by the further formation of glutinous aluminium hydroxide. As direct dyestuffs there may be employed Toluylene Red, Paramime Blue, Sirius Yellow and Pluto Blacks, and as acid dyestuffs Supramine Red, Milling Blue, Milling Yellow and Paratine Chrome Black A. The anodizing bath may consist of an aqueous solution containing 2-3 per cent of oxalic acid or 3-4 per cent of ammonium oxalate or 3-4 per cent of chromic acid ; solutions of aqueous solutions of sulphuric acid, boric acid or silicic acid or their salts may also be employed.
