Abstract

487,605. Colouring aluminium; printing processes. HILL, F., RADLEY, J. A., and IMPERIAL CHEMICAL INDUSTRIES, Ltd. Dec. 22, 1936, No. 35203. [Class 93] [Also in Group XVI] Oxide films produced artificially on aluminium or its alloys, for instance those containing 5 per cent or less of silicon, copper, magnesium, or zinc, are coloured by treatment with a dyebath containing a mono- or disazo or anthraquinone dyestuff containing a hydroxy-alkyl sulphuric ester group attached to an aromatic nucleus through an N or O atom and devoid of nuclear sulphonic or carboxylic groups. The dyebath may be a neutral one containing Glauber's salt, or it may be an acid bath containing e.g. acetic acid. The colour may be applied by brushing, spraying, or printing. (1) To produce a deep scarlet, 1 part of pnitroaniline # N-ethyl-N-#-hydroxyethylaniline sulphuric ester is dissolved in 1500 parts of water and 1À5 parts of acetic acid are added. Anodized aluminium is immersed therein, and the temperature is raised to the boil and maintained there for 20 minutes. (2) A dye-bath for producing a reddish-violet comprises 1 part of 2 : 4-dinitroaniline # N - ethyl - N - # - hydroxyethylaniline sulphuric ester dissolved in 3000 parts of water containing 3 parts of acetic acid. (3) A dye-bath for producing a yellow comprises 1 part of p-aminophenyl-#-hydroxyethyl ether sulphuric ester # p-cresol dissolved in 1500 parts of water containing 1À5 parts of acetic acid. (4) A dye-bath for producing a blue comprises (1) part of the sodium salt of the sulphuric ester of 1 - methylamino - 4 - # - hydroxyethylamino anthraquinone dissolved in 1500 parts of water containing 1À5 parts of acetic acid. Specifications 237,739, [Class 15 (ii)], 441,089, [Group IV], and 474,609, are referred to.
