Abstract
Chromium-nickel stainless steel, which preferably contains at least 8% nickel is electrolytically coloured by the passage of an alternating current using as electrolyte a solution containing 0.5-10M chromic acid, with or without sulphuric acid. The chromic acid to sulphate present by weight is preferably at least 10:1. The steel may be formed with a gold coating, which may be changed to red or blue either by continuing the electrolysis at a higher temperature e.g. 60 DEG C. for red and 90 DEG C. for blue; or by heating the gold film in air in the temperature range 300 DEG -700 DEG C. until the film reaches the desired colour. The initial film may be formed using a current density of 300-1000 Amps/sq. ft. and a temperature below 40 DEG C. The frequency used may be 15-100c/s. The film may be partially removed to form design or lettering using a wax resist and hydrochloric acid as etchant.
