Abstract
520,690. Iron oxide. PRIESTMAN COLLIERIES, Ltd., and FRENCH, T. G. Sept. 30, 1938, No. 28499. [Class 1 (iii)] [Also in Group XXXVI] Iron oxide pigments are made by electrolysing a solution of a sodium or potassium salt using an iron anode. The current density may be 0.3 amps per sq. in., and the direction of the current may be periodically reversed. Air is blown into the electrolyte to oxidize the ferrous hydroxide produced. The precipitate is filtered, dried and may be heated to temperatures of 200-1000‹C. to produce oxides of various colours. Alternatively the filter cake is mixed with water to form a slurry, which is boiled with sodium hypochlorite solution. Ferrous sulphate is added and the boiling continued to produce a ferric hydroxide ochre pigment. This may also be varied in colour by calcining at different temperatures.
