Abstract
359,494. Electrolytic treatment of aluminium and its alloys. SHEPPARD, S. R., 61, London Road, Redhill, Surrey. July 23, 1930, No. 22187. Grant of Patent opposed. [Class 41.] Articles made of or coated with aluminium or its alloys are provided with a resistant hydroxide coating by anodic treatment in an electrolyte containing a mono- or polyhydric alcohol. An acid such as sulphuric or acetic acid is preferably present. By employing an electrolyte containing 5 per cent sulphuric acid and 5 per cent glycerine a hard coating is contained, while an electrolyte containing 25 per cent sulphuric acid and 20 per cent glycerine gives a coating which may be stretched without fracture. Other suitable electrolytes contain 5 cc. of sulphuric acid and 25 cc. of glycol or 30 cc. of ethyl alcohol to 100 cc. of water. Amyl alcohol may also be employed. A current density of 8 amps. per square foot at 16 volts may be used. The temperature is maintained at 27‹ C. A lead- or glass-lined vat and cathodes of lead or carbon plates are employed. The articles should be cleaned before treatment.
