Abstract

298,587. Carreras, R. S. July 7, 1927. Bismuth hydroxide and bismuth carbonate, obtaining.-Bismuth hydroxide is obtained by electrolysis of a weak e.g. 3 per cent solution of sodium chlorate charged with carbonic acid gas, using anodes of bismuth and cathodes of carbon, zinc, iron, aluminium or other suitable metal. The electrolyte is regenerated with carbonic acid gas within or without the cell. The cell may be of 500 litres capacity, the electrodes 30 cm. by 30 cm. spaced 5 cm. apart; a current density of 0.6 amps per sq. dcm. at 3 volts and a temperature of 40‹ C. are employed. Slightly carbonated bismuth hydroxide is precipitated; the carbonate is removed by washing. According to the Provisional Specification bismuth carbonate may be precipitated by employing a high percentage of carbonic acid gas in the electrolyte.
