Process for producing colored anodic coatings on aluminum, aluminum alloys and articles coated with aluminum.
The invention relates to the coloring of anodic coatings on aluminum, aluminum alloys and articles coated with aluminum.
It is already known to produce colored anodic coatings on aluminum by means of ammonia-containing electrolytic baths to which a dye is added; however, relatively high voltages are required for this process.
An improved method has now been found in which much lower voltages are used. According to the invention, an anodic coating, which is produced in an acidic electrolytic bath, is allowed to take up an organic dye electrolytically. The anodic coating can act as a stain (mordant) with the formation of varnishes.
For example, dyes of the alizarin series are suitable for the present process.
In one embodiment of the invention, the dye can be added to the electrolytic bath used to prepare the anodic coating, such as a bath containing glycerine and weakly acidic water.
In another embodiment, especially if the addition of dye to the electrolyte does not appear expedient, the anodic coating is first formed and the coated object is then removed and made the anode in another suitable bath which contains the dye. If desired, the current intensity in the second process stage can be reduced here.
In the present process, the dye penetrates deeper and the color is more even than in processes in which the color is simply painted onto the anodic coating.
Embodiment: In a process in which two baths are used, the first anodic coating can be produced in one of the following electrolytes:
1. Water with an addition of 5% H2S04 plus 5% glycerine (for an extremely hard coating).
2. Water with an addition of 25% H2SO4 plus 20% glycerine (for a coating that can be stretched without tearing).
3,100 cm3 water, 5 cm "HSOi, 25 cm3 glycol or 30 cm ethyl alcohol.
A voltage of about 12 volts is sufficient for baths 1 and 2 and a voltage of about 16 volts and a current density of about 1 amp per square decimeter are sufficient for bath 3. The temperature must be kept at around 27 C.
The material is removed and treated further in a bath without drying, containing 12 g of dye, dissolved in 120 cm3 of glycerine and mixed with 2 l of water, at a voltage of 3 volts, a current density of 0-33 amps per square decimeter and a temperature of 50 C. Solway blue B, Alizarin red or Solochrome yellow can be used as the dye in this case.
