Ornamenting.-A process for ornamenting and preventing corrosion of the surface of aluminium and aluminium alloys consists in treatment with a solution containing sodium or other silicofluoride, a nitrate, sulphate, phosphate, or other neutral salt of an alkali or ammonium, and a sulphate, nitrate, chloride, or other salt of nickel. cobalt, or other metal of the iron group, other than iron. The solution may be employed hot up to 100‹ C. The reaction is accelerated by the presence of molydenum. The surface becomes coated with oxides of the metals of the iron group and has an irregularly mottled appearance, and will take enamels, lacquers, &c.
