Abstract

An adherent glazing coating is produced upon aluminium and its alloys, by first giving the metal a film coating of oxide, and then applying a coating of urea formaldehyde resin or thio-urea formaldehyde resin. The oxide film may be produced by anodic oxidation or by a purely chemical treatment of the metal, and this film or the resin coating may be coloured. The resin, to which may be added pigments, plasticizers, hardening agents such as ammonium nitrate or chloride, and other synthetic resins, may be applied in solution or in suspension, by brushing, spraying or dipping, and, after drying, the resin coating may be hardened by heating. Several layers, similar or differing in composition, may be applied, each layer being dried and hardened by heating. According to an example: powdered urea-formaldehyde resin is dissolved in a mixture of water, alcohol, triacetin and monomethylic ether of glycol, titanium white is added, and the whole homogenized. The mass is sprayed on to the oxidized aluminium, dried, and hardened by heating for 3--5 hours at 120--130 DEG C. According to the Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91, resins formed by the condensation of formaldehyde with any carbamide may be used, but this subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
