Abstract

Castings of magnesium or an alloy containing at least 80 per cent. of magnesium by weight are buffed and cleaned and coated with zinc by immersion in a solution at 180 DEG F. of composition:-tetrasodium phosphate 16, hydrated zinc sulphate 5.3, potassium fluoride 1.0, potassium carbonate 0.7 oz. per U.S.A. gallon. Copper, nickel and chromium are then successively deposited electrolytically. The plated castings, which are normally subject to blistering when heated above 450 DEG F., are then subjected to prolonged heating at a temperature between 250 DEG F. and the blistering temperature. The castings may then be raised above the latter temperature without blistering. The heat treatment may last for 4-16 hours at 350 DEG -450 DEG F.
