Abstract

279,273. Smith, W. Dec. 14, 1926. Coating; coating non-metallic surfaces with metals; coating by dipping.-In a process for impregnating metals or non-metallic materials such as firebrick &c. with aluminium or aluminium alloy, the metal &c. is first coated, preferably electrolytically, with cadmium and then treated with aluminium or aluminium, alloy either by immersing the metal &c. in the molten metal or alloy or by exposing the metal, &c. to the vapours of the said metal or alloy. When treating ferrous metals the molten bath may be at a temperature of 700-960‹ C. and when exposing the articles to the metal &c. vapours, the articles may be placed in a closed container with the powdered aluminium &c. and treated at a temperature of 650-1000‹ C. or may be placed in a separate container into which the aluminium &c. vapours are introduced. The following aluminium alloys may be used :-aluminium 94 per cent, cadmium 1.5 per cent, zinc 2 per cent, iron 1.5 per cent, copper 1 per cent, aluminium 97 per cent, nickel 1 per cent, copper 2 per cent; aluminium 98 per cent, copper 15 per cent, manganese 0.5 per cent.
