Abstract
A method of zinc coating ferrous metal which may include mild and H.T. steel, all cast irons and alloy ferrous metals, comprises cleaning the metal in a detergent bath or by sand or shot blasting and if necessary in a pickling bath, applying a prime Zn coat e.g. by spraying with molten zinc either of high purity or containing 10% Al, covering the coated metal with a dry powder mixture consisting of 40-90 parts by volume of Zn-ZnO powder composed of 80-99 parts Zn and 1 - 20 parts ZnO, both by weight, and 10-60 parts by volume of an inert material, e.g. sand, alumina, or preferably vermiculite, and heating for 3 or more hours at 385-410 DEG C.. A flux, e.g. ammonium chloride, may be applied before the prime Zn coat and the metal may be cleaned after heat treatment by tumbling in sawdust.
