Abstract

A steel surface is blasted with metallic grit coated with powdered corrosion-resisting metal, whereby the surface is cleaned without appreciably hardening it, and the corrosion-resisting metal is deposited as a protective coating on the surface. The coating of the grit with the powdered metal is effected by thorough agitation of a mixture of the grit and metal. The grit may be steel wire, plate or cast shot of 0.4-0.8 mm. The powder may be zinc substantially below 10m and containing not more than 0.2% each of lead and arsenic. Zinc alloys, aluminium or alloys thereof, lead or alloys thereof, tin or alloys thereof or magnesium or alloys thereof may be used singly or in combination. The blasting may be performed by a centrifugal wheel with an outlet velocity of 50 m/sec.
