Abstract

Stainless steel is prepared for electroplating by immersion for a short time in an acid solution of a heavy metal salt of a concentration not exceeding 20 gms. per litre so as to deposit a metal layer of less than 1/1000 mm. in thickness. Salts of metals having a specific gravity of at least 5, e.g. nickel, copper, cadmium or cobalt, may be employed. Suitable immersion baths are: (i) 5 gms. copper sulphate, 100 gms. hydrochloric acid, 1 litre water; (ii) 10 gms. nickel, copper or cadmium sulphate, 50 gms. hydrochloric acid, 50 gms. sulphuric acid, 1 litre water; (iii) 5 gms. nickel, copper or cadmium sulphate, 100 gms. sulphuric acid, 1 litre water. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 comprises also the following subject-matter: (i) preliminary etching in hydrochloric acid or sulphuric acid or a mixture thereof; (ii) treatment of steels of the following percentage composition: (a) manganese 9, chromium 18, carbon 0,1, nickel 0,4-0,5, remainder iron, (b) manganese 16-17, chromium 10, carbon 0,16-0,17, lithium 0,35, nickel 0,6, molybdenum 0,07, remainder iron. This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
