Abstract

438,228. Electroplating. LONDON ALUMINIUM CO., Ltd., 57, Westwood Road, Witton, Birmingham, and BURFORD, W. A., Glencairn, Walmly Road, Sutton Coldfield. Aug. 25, 1934, No. 24522. [Class 41] Aluminium is prepared for electroplating by immersion in a concentrated solution of a metallic salt whereby a film of the metal is deposited ; the film is thereafter dissolved in an acid bath leaving an oxide free aluminium surface which is then rinsed in water and subjected to the main plating operation while still wet. Suitable minimum concentrations for the baths employed in the immersion treatment are (i) 200 gms. per litre ferric chloride, (ii) 400 gms. per litre crystallized nickel chloride or (iii) 700 gms. per litre crystallized nickel fluoborate, each at ordinary temperature. Nitric or nitro-sulphuric acid may be used for dissolution of the film. Chromium may be deposited directly on a surface so prepared.
