Abstract
A chromium electrodeposition process of a bath for obtaining chromed articles, comprising: a) preparing an aqueous bath of electrolytic chromium comprising from 0.1 to 1.2 moles/liter of trivalent chromium, from 0.5 to 3 moles of formate per mole of trivalent chromium, 0.1 to 0.5 moles of acetate per mole of formate, at least 0.01 moles/liter of bromide and at least 0.05 moles/liter of ammonium and, optionally, one or more of the ingredients listed below: borate, chloride, sulfate, iron, nickel, sodium and potassium, by dissolving in water at room temperature or elevated water-soluble salts of the species required in sufficient quantities to provide the desired concentration, allowing it to cool later, in case the solution has been made hot; and, b) apply a current density between 5 and 1000 amps/ft2 on the solution from the previous stage, to cause the corresponding reaction of electrolytic reduction of the trivalent chromium or metallic chromium which is deposited on the object to be chromed.
