Abstract
517,415. Electrolytic pickling of metals. BLAUT. S, J., and LANG, H. M. April 22, 1938. No. 12128. [Class 41] Scale is removed from nickel or alloys containing nickel or chromium such as stainless steel, nickel silver, high speed steels containing in addition tungsten, vanadium and molybdenum &c. by subjecting the metal as anode to electrolytic treatment in a bath of sulphuric acid, sufficiently concentrated to develop passivity on the surface of the metal. Sulphuric acid of 30 to 80'per cent. strength by volume may be used. The bath may contain 2-20 per cent. of commercial concentrated hydrofluoric acid. Current density of 75-200 amps. per sq. ft. may be used. The metals after treatment may have a bright satin or etched surface. A small addition of nitric acid may be made to the bath to prevent gassing.
