512,134. Piston rings. HOWLETT, J. W. March 17, 1939, No. 8520. Addition to 488,687. [Class 122 (i)] [Also in Group II] A piston ring made of cast iron containing more than 0.15 per cent. of phosphorus is treated by the method described in the parent Specification to give it a cell-like surface and is then plated with a relatively soft metal or alloy, e.g., tin, cadmium, zinc, or their alloys. The plating is thin, e.g. between 0.0005 and 0.005 of an inch in thickness, so that it follows the contours of the cell-like surface, the pores not being completely filled with plating metal.
