Abstract

566,360. Bearings. VANDERVELL PRODUCTS, Ltd., and GREEN, D. F. May 22, 1943, No. 8180. [Class 12 (i)] [Also in Group XXXVI] The bearing surface of engine crank-shafts and the like consists of a very thin layer of tin-copper alloy applied by electrodeposition, the amount of tin in the bearing layer varying between 75 per cent and 99.75 per cent, the remainder being copper and impurities. The thickness of the layer is in the region of .01 inch when applied direct to the main bearing, but not more than .005 inch when applied to an intermediary layer which may have a silver or copper base with tin and lead additions. In the plating bath steel insoluble anodes are used and the bath consists of sodium stannate with potassium and copper cyanides, whilst sodium stannate with sodium and copper cyanides are added daily to maintain the composition of the bath.
