Abstract
Articles of aluminium or its alloys are prepared for electro-plating by producing an intermediate coating of zinc by treatment in a zincate dipping solution containing a cyanide of a heavy metal other than zinc which is capable of forming complex cyanides and an alkali-metal cyanide, the latter being in such substantial quantity that its weight is more than four times that of the heavy metal cyanide. Electrolysis may be employed in the treatment but simple dipping is preferred. Suitable proportions for the dipping solution are in gms. per litre, Zn O 25-150, preferably 50-100, Na OH 100-600, preferably 250-350, KCN 30-170, preferably 130-170, Cu CN 0.1-40, preferably 3-6; Na OH may be replaced by KOH and KCN by NaCN and copper may be partially or wholly replaced by silver or cadmium. The zinc coating may be dissolved in acid, e.g. nitric acid and a second zinc coating then similarly applied. Before treatment in the zincate dipping solution the articles may be degreased first with trichlorethylene then electrolytically. Treatment of the following aluminium alloys is described (i) an alloy containing 4 per cent. Cu, 0.6 per cent. Mg, 0.6 per cent. Mn and 0.4 per cent. Si (ii) an alloy containing 4.5 per cent. Si, 0.7 per cent. Mg, 0.5 per cent. Mn (iii) an alloy containing 11 per cent. Mg.
