Abstract

737,713. Electrodeposition of lead and antimony and alloys thereof. GENERAL MOTORS CORPORATION. May 11, 1953 [June 3, 1952; Sept. 22, 1952], No. 13009/53. Class 41. In the electrodeposition of lead or a lead alloy or antimony or an antimony alloy a solution is used containing an alkali metal salt of ethylene diamine tetra-acetic acid. The salt may be the sodium or potassium salt, particularly tetra sodium ethylene diamine tetra acetate. Lead and lead alloys may be deposited from solutions containing lead acetate, lead oxide, lead fluoborate, lead chloride and lead carbonate, and antimony and its alloys from solutions containing antimony potassium tartrate. Lead-indium alloys may be deposited from solutions which also contain indium chloride or hydroxide. Antimony alloys may be deposited from solutions also containing lead acetate or oxide, copper sulphate, stannous fluoborate, cadmium sulphate or chloride, or indium chloride. The various plating solutions may also contain sodium potassium tartrate or other tartrates, dibasic ammonium citrate or other citrates or acetates. A coating of lead may be deposited on an article, followed by a coating of leadantimony alloy, followed by an antimony lead alloy or antimony-copper alloy. The first layer (of lead) may be replaced by one of indium or tin. Chromium may be deposited on a layer of antimony or antimony alloy.
