A process for electro-plating objects of aluminium or its alloys consists in subjecting the objects to an electrolytic non-plating pretreatment by making them the cathode in a solution containing an alkali-metal cyanide and a cyanide of a metal of Group Ib or II of the Periodic Table, and subsequently electro-plating the pre-treated objects. Examples of electrolytes are an aqueous solution containing sodium cyanide and zinc cyanide, an aqueous solution containing alkali-metal hydroxide, alkali-metal carbonate, zinc cyanide and alkali-metal cyanide, and an aqueous solution containing alkali-metal hydroxide; alkali-metal carbonate, potassium copper cyanide and alkali-metal cyanide. The objects may be electro-plated with copper, chromium, silver or other metals.
