Abstract

In a process and solution for producing corrosion-resistant surfaces on metals and alloys, e.g., iron, steel, zinc, aluminium and its alloys, the surface is treated with an aqueous solution containing the acid radicle of phosphoric acid and having dissolved therein a minor proportion, i.e., an amount up to their maximum solubility in the bath, of one or more complex metal phosphates or mixed metal phosphates having at least 50 per cent. of one of the said metals in the anion. The complex phosphates of barium, calcium, strontium, copper, cobalt and nickel are said to be particularly suitable, and structural formulae are given both for the hydrated and anhydrous forms; whilst the mixed metal phosphates of an alkali metal (sodium or potassium) and cobalt, zinc, nickel or magnesium are likewise said to be particularly suitable and their structural formulae are given. These phosphates may be heated to approximately 200 DEG C. before being added to the phosphating bath-usually being added in solution in phosphoric acid-and the phosphating baths described in Specifications 419,487 and 447,176, [both in Group II], are preferred. Specifications 599,728 and 599,784 also are referred to.ALSO:In a process and solution for producing a protective coating on the surfaces of metals and alloys, e.g. iron, steel, zinc, aluminium and its alloys, the surface is treated with an aqueous solution containing the acid radicle of phosphoric acid and having dissolved therein a minor proportion, i.e. an amount up to their maximum solubility in the bath, of one or more complex metal phosphates or mixed metal phosphates having at least 50 per cent of one of the said metals in the anion.
