Abstract
A phosphate coating is formed on a ferrous metal surface by immersion in an acid solution containing by weight: .Zn.0.1 -2%, .PO4.0.8 -4%, .NO3.0 -5%, .Fe++.0.1 -1%, .citric acid.0.125-2%, one or more ions of Ni, Co, .Li, Bi, Ce and Mn.0 -0.05%, the ratio by weight of NO3 to PO4 being less than 1.25:1. The solution is preferably at 190-210 DEG F. and the ferrous metal surface is treated for 10-60 minutes. Starting materials for making up the solution may be ZnO, H3PO4, ZnH2PO4 and Zn(NO3)2. Other metal ions ma be introduced as NO3, PO4 or CO3, and citric acid may be added as citrate. The phosphate coating may be immediately rinsed with a hot dilute solution of chromic acid, e.g. containing 0.01-0.5% by weight CrO3, preferably mixed with phosphoric acid, prior to treating with oil, stain, wax or paint finish.
