Abstract

An aqueous acidic phosphate-containing concentrate or solution for forming phosphate coatings on zinc or ferrous metal surfaces and having a pH of 0 to 4 and containing by weight 0.1 to 75% of phosphate ions and 0.01 to 40% of nickel ions is prepared by dissolving NiO, made by oxidizing Ni or a Ni compound, e.g. carbonyl, at a temperature not exceeding 760 DEG C. (contrasted with stated known process of preparation using NiCO3 or NiO made by firing at 900-950 DEG C.), in the acidic components of the solution. The solution may contain 0.01 to 40% of metal coating ions other than Ni, e.g. of Zn, Mn or Fe sufficient to form H2PO4- with the phosphate ions, and 0.01 to 10% of other additives such as F- or complex F ions, e.g. BF4- or SiF6-, NO2-, NO3- or S- ions, e.g. added as ZnO, MnO2 (with or without Fe powder), FeSO4, HF, H2SiF6, NaBF4, HNO3 or NaNO3; the solution may contain 5 to 70% water.
