Abstract

A phosphate coating is formed on zinc surfaces, particularly those galvanized by hot-dipping, by treating them in one or more zones with a solution containing phosphate ion, e.g. 0.5-4% Zn and/or Mn ion, and as accelerators or activators one or more of Ni, Co, Cu, NO3-, NO2-and F-ion, e.g. 0.01-1% Co and/or Ni added as carbonate, sulphate, phosphate or nitrate and 0.03-1% F- ion added as HF, fluoborate or silicofluoride, and, when introduced initially into the treatment zones, containing at least 0.0015% of ferric ion, which is maintained during use. Preferably the total quantity of Co, Ni, Zn and Mn ion is at least sufficient to form H2PO4-with all the phosphate ion, and the solution is maintained saturated with the ferric ion, which may be added as phosphate, nitrate, chloride, fluoride or fluoborate. Alternatively, ferrous ion may be added with an oxidizing agent such as H2O2, permanganate or nitrate ion. The treatment may be by spraying or immersion in a bath. After phosphate coating, the surfaces may be rinsed in a dilute solution of chromic with or without phosphoric acid, e.g. one containing 0.025-0.1% CrO3. Specifications 560,847, 560,858, 587,176, 849,526 and U.S.A. Specification 2,874,081 are referred to.
