Abstract

504,620. Coating metals. PYRENE CO., Ltd. (Parker Rust Proof Co.) Oct. 25, 1937, No. 29146. [Class 82 (ii)] A metal surface is made resistant to corrosion by treatment with a hexavalent chromium compound in the vapour phase or with the vapour obtained by heating a nitrate to a temperature at which a metallic compound appears in the vapour phase, or with both. Vaporized chromic anhydride alone may be used or the vapour obtained by heating a mixture of chromic anhydride and a chlorine compound, e.g. ferric chloride, sodium chloride, hydrochloric acid or a chlorate, e.g., potassium chlorate. More than one chlorine compound may be used. The vapour from a mixture of chromic anhydride, potassium chlorate and manganese dioxide is stated to be especially satisfactory. Other substances the vapours of which may be used are a chromate or dichromate, or a mixture of sodium chromate or dichromate and an acid such as sulphuric or phosphoric acid, or ferric or manganese nitrate. The temperature is preferably under 1000‹ F. and the material to be vaporized is preferably heated in the treatment chamber. The metal after treatment may be baked at a temperature between about 450‹ F. and 1000‹ F., or may be rinsed in one or both of water or chromic acid, or may be both rinsed and baked. The metal surface treated may be iron, steel, zinc, galvanized metal, aluminium, stainless steel, rustless iron, lead, tin, terne-plate, cadmium, nickel, copper or magnesium.
