Abstract

A hydrophillic layer is formed on e.g. an aluminium plate for use in planographic printing by treating the plate with a solution of a fluoride selected from the tetrafluorides of transition metals, the complex transition metal hydrofluoric acids containing four, five or six fluorine atoms, and the alkali metal, alkaline earth metal or ammonium salts of such acids, and simultaneously or subsequently treating with chromic acid. Examples are: ZrF4, H2ZrF6, K2ZrF6, Na2ZrF6, KZrF5, NaZrF5, TiF4, K2TiF6, HfF4, K2HfF6, NaHfF6, CaZrF6, and (NH4)2ZrF6. The fluoride may be present in an aqueous solution in an amount from 0:01% to 1% by weight. The bath temperature is 70 to 180 DEG F., and the pH 3.5 to 5. A soluble zinc salt may be added to the bath. The chromic acid bath contains 0.001% to 2.5% by weight of CrO3 and is at a temperature of 70 DEG to 180 DEG F. The plate is subsequently coated with a light sensitive material e.g. diazo resins, bichromated albumin, gum, casein, furfural-acetone condensation products or cinnamyl resinous materials. The plate may be initially cleaned and treated with an activating acid e.g. phosphoric, chromic, nitric, sulphuric or oxalic.
