Abstract
Mercury trichlorethylenide is prepared by agitating trichlorethylene with an aqueous alkaline solution of an alkali metal cyanide to which freshly-precipitated mercuric oxide has been added, preferably as an aqueous paste. The process may be started with the use of an aqueous alkaline solution of mercuric cyanide and after removal of the mercury compound formed, the aqueous solution then regenerated by the addition of the mercuric oxide in an amount equivalent to the mercury compound previously formed. After removal of the mercury compound, the process of regeneration may be repeated for the production of further batches of mercury compound. An example is given.
