Abstract

Heavy metal compounds are removed from cellulose derivatives by causing the solid derivative and a solution of a cyanide to remain in contact for some time and thereafter washing the cellulose derivative free from cyanide. Dilute aqueous solutions of sodium, potassium, or ammonium cyanide may be used, and the treatment may be applied either before or after the usual stabilization. In an example, a charge of cellulose acetate which has been stabilized and bleached, is treated with a 0,04 per cent solution of sodium cyanide, and then washed free from cyanide. In another example, unbleached precipitated cellulose acetate is treated with a 0,04 per cent solution of sodium cyanide, washed free from cyanide, and the process repeated.
