Imitation fires.-In the manufacture of artificial " fuel " for imitation fires, of the kind comprising irregular pieces of glass or other translucent material, part of the surface of the material is first subjected to a darkening process, such as by spraying with a black solution, and then some or all of the pieces are treated by spraying or similar means to produce a grey or ash-like appearance. The original material, if not sufficiently obscured, is, before being subjected to the spraying processes, frosted by immersion in a frosting solution or by agitation in a rotating barrel.
