Abstract
684,910. Treating frosted glass. DEUTSCHE LIBBEY-OWENS-GES. FUR MASCHINELLE GLASHERSTELLUNG AKT.-GES. Oct. 9, 1951 [Nov. 16, 1950], No. 23482/51. Class 56. [Also in Group XV] The cavities, cracks &c. in sand-blast frosted glass surfaces resulting from the frosting process are filled with translucent natural or synthetic resins, plastics or the like. This treatment prevents spotting which is due to the penetration of impurities into the cavities. The glass surface is preferably treated with a solution of the resin &c. in a suitable solvent which shows good wettability towards glass, but emulsions of synthetic resins &c. or fluid synthetic resins &c. e.g. in the form of pre-polymerides, may also be applied and allowed to harden. The synthetic resins &c. are preferably related to glass in their optical properties, and may be coloured or uncoloured, and insoluble in water. The concentration of the solution of the synthetic resin &c. is such that it will fill up the cavities but will not produce a complete film, but if necessary the glass is subsequently cleaned with one solvent to remove any film. The solution may be applied by immersion, spraying, or brushing &c. Patterns can be produced by using stencils so that a part only of the glass surface is treated.
