Abstract

To obtain pure silica suitable for use in the manufacture of glass which will transmit ultra-violet light, the silica in pulverulent form is added to an acid solution and the pulp, which is preferably heated, is agitated in the presence of a flotation oil comprising a sulphur derivative of cresol. The iron impurities are floated off and the silica is then dried. To reduce the iron content still further, e.g. to about 0,001 per cent calculated as ferric oxide, the silica may be washed on a concentrating table before or after the flotation treatment.
