Abstract
An oxide surface is formed on an iron or iron alloy surface, the oxide reduced and mercury applied thereto. The oxidation-reduction process may be carried out on a permalloy surface (Ni 45 per cent, Fe 55 per cent; or Ni 52 per cent, Fe 48 per cent) by heating at 700 DEG C. for 10 minutes in air, followed by heating at 700 DEG C. for 30 minutes in wet hydrogen and mercury may then be applied by heating in a chamber containing mercury and hydrogen at 400 DEG C. for 60 minutes. Prior to the oxidation-reduction process, the permalloy may be heated in wet hydrogen at 1000 DEG C. for 90 minutes, cooled for 10 minutes to 2 hours in the same atmosphere, etched for 7 minutes in a mixture of equal parts of 38 per cent hydrochloric acid and a saturated solution of copper sulphate, washed in water and alcohol and dried; etching may be replaced by sandblasting.
