248,140. British Thomson-Houston Co., Ltd., (General Electric Co.). Jan. 6, 1925. Annealing.-To improve the magnetic properties of silicon steel sheets for use in the manufacture of transformer cores &c., the surface layer of the sheet is removed as by pickling in acid, and the sheet annealed under deoxidizing or reducing conditions, e.g. in a vacuum or an atmosphere of reducing gas. The sheets may be pickled in a solution containing 10-20 per cent of sulphuric acid for about 15 minutes or more until the surface scale has been removed completely, washed, dried and then annealed in a vacuum or in hydrogen gas at about 800-850‹ C. for about an hour. The annealing process may be carried out in the furnace described in Specification 11370/13.
