Abstract
A method of producing high permeability magnetic material comprises melting together under non - oxidizing conditions the ingredients containing Ni 75-85 per cent, Mo 2-7 per cent, a small percentage, e.g. up to 1 per cent, of Mn, if desired, to improve the workability, the remainder being iron and incidental impurities containing not more than 0.2 per cent of silicon by weight of the alloy, heat-treating a solid body of this alloy in hydrogen at a temperature above 1100 DEG C but below its melting point, and finally maintaining the alloy within a temperature range of 600-300 DEG C for a period of time sufficient to develop the required magnetic properties, e.g. by cooling through this range at a uniform rate of 2 DEG C per minute. The alloy may, alternatively, be maintained at a temperature within the said range, e.g. 480 DEG C for a time period sufficient to develop the required properties and cooled rapidly to room temperature. The alloy may be made by melting the ingredients in air under reduced pressure or in the presence of a non-oxidizing gas such as hydrogen, nitrogen or helium so that the initial partial pressure of oxygen does not exceed 2 1/2 inches of mercury. Prior to heat treatment the alloy may be formed into tape, an insulating coating being applied to the tape which is then wound into a coil.
