Abstract

589,551. Heat-treating alloys. SHEPHERD, G. R. (Westinghouse Electric International Co.). May 17, 1944, No. 9493. [Class 72] To reduce the magneto-striction in a silicon iron alloy containing up to 6 per cent. of silicon and which has been fabricated in strip form and heat-treated to develop its magnetic properties, the strip is heated, e.g., for 1-2 minutes, at a temperature between the Curie point and 825‹C. preferably 700-825‹C., while applying tension to the strip, the tension being below the elastic limit of the strip, e.g., 500-2,000 lbs. per sq. in. After heating the strip is cooled, whilst still under tension, to a temperature of 90-110‹C., preferably 100‹C. The strip 12 is passed from a supply reel 14 to a winding reel 16 through an open-ended furnace 10, the predetermined tension being applied to the strip by a brake 18 which applies a suitable drag to the reel 14, and the reel 16 being far enough away from the furnace to enable the strip to cool down to as stated above before it is wound on the reel.
