Abstract
In a method of making permanently magnetizable material an iron-aluminium alloy containing 45-75 per cent of aluminium is treated with hot aqueous caustic alkali to dissolve the aluminium, the undissolved iron containing particles being collected as a wet paste and compacted while wet to produce a shape which is magnetized. The caustic alkali may range from a 50 per cent solution to a concentrated solution of caustic soda or caustic potash and the treatment continued until not more than 5 per cent of aluminium remains in the alloy. The shapes may be immersed in oil at 125 DEG C. to dehydrate them and stabilize them against oxidation.
